This course is intended to provide a comprehensive understanding of human research ethics for social and behavior socials, and is intended for researchers intending to pursue research on human subjects at their institutions.
Students will be educated on the history of Common Rule, the Belmont Report, IRB functions and review types, terminology regarding research ethics, procedures to maximize safety and confidentiality, how to identify and minimize study risks, the informed consent process, online research best practices, reporting requirements for unexpected problems and considerations for research in vulnerable populations including children, primary/secondary school students, cognitively impaired adults and prisoners.
This course is not intended to replace or supersede 45 CFR 46 (Common Rule) and should be used to prepare researchers before their first research proposal to an Institutional Review Board.
